YPAK is at World of Coffee Panama — Booth 1433, Panama Convention Center, 23–25 October 2026. This is the first World of Coffee held in Latin America, and the first held in a coffee-producing country. We are on the stand with samples of every format we make, and with the two answers this region actually needs: what short runs really cost, and what a structure has to be if the coffee inside it is going to Europe.

World of Coffee Panama is billed by its organisers as the largest gathering of Latin American specialty coffee producers and global buyers: Вокруг 370 Экспоненты, more than 13,000 visitors expected, and the World Barista Championship running alongside it from 22 Кому 25 October with national champions from more than fifty countries. It is organised by the Specialty Coffee Association with the Panamanian chamber of commerce and industry (CCIAP) and the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama (SCAP).

That mix changes what a packaging conversation is about. At a consumer-market show, most visitors are buying bags for a shop. Вот, a large share of the people walking the floor are estates, cooperatives and exporters — businesses whose packaging decision is tied to a buyer in another country, a shipment date, and increasingly a regulation they did not write. The stand is set up for that: open table, samples on the surface, no presentation schedule.

Короткие пробеги: what a 500-piece order actually costs

A single estate putting its own name on a bag for the first time does not need 50,000 куски. It needs 500 Кому 3,000, and it needs them to look like a brand rather than a sample. The barrier is almost never the printing itself — it is the plate or cylinder charge that traditional gravure or flexo applies once, before a single bag exists, and which lands entirely on a small order.

Digital print removes that charge, and it is worth being precise about what it does and does not fix. It removes the fixed cost, which is what makes a short run viable at all. It does not make the unit price equal to a gravure run at volume — it will not, and any supplier who says otherwise is comparing two different things. What it does is let a producer test a market, a label design or a buyer’s private label without committing working capital to inventory. Bring your volume and your deadline and we will show you where the crossover sits for your format.

Export to Europe: where recyclability now decides the sale

Latin America is one of the European Union’s main coffee suppliers, so a large share of the packaging bought in this region ends up in an EU market. Поскольку 12 Август 2026 the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation applies, and it does not ask whether a material is nice. It grades the finished packaging unit A, B or C against a score, and it sets a floor below which the unit cannot be placed on the market at all.

That is a purchasing consequence, not a legal footnote: a roaster in Madrid or Milan who is accountable for the grade will increasingly ask their green coffee supplier what the bag is made of. We will go through your current structure layer by layer and tell you which parameters are exposed — the film, the coating, клапан, the ink load. Transit and humidity: what a tropical supply chain does to paper

A bag that performs in a warehouse in Europe is not automatically the right bag for a container sitting in tropical humidity for six weeks. Paper loses strength as moisture content rises, board softens, and a folding carton that was crisp at the filling line can arrive with rounded corners and a compressed stack. This is a structural question with a structural answer: board grade and calliper, the moisture barrier, how the pallet is wrapped, and whether the format should be a carton at all.

We would rather discuss this on the stand with your actual shipping route than answer it as a general rule, because the correct answer changes with transit time, mode and the point of stuffing. Bring the route and the season you ship in.

Valve and seal: the two failure points that only appear after shipping

Degassing and sealing failures rarely show up at the filling line. They show up three weeks later, in another country, as coffee that has gone flat or a pallet that has lost its vacuum — by which point the cost is a claim, not a rework. We will look at the valve type against your roast profile and fill weight, and at the seal window for your film: the temperature, pressure and dwell range inside which the seal is reliable, and what your filling conditions do to it.

PPWR in two numbers: тем 70 percent floor and 2038

Most of the uncertainty around the PPWR is not whether the rules exist. It is which rule applies to which piece of packaging. Two provisions account for most of the questions we get from exporters, and both are already fixed in the text.

Первый, the floor. Таблица Приложения II 3 sets the grades and the bands: Grade A at 95% or above, Grade B at 80%, Grade C at 70%. Below 70% the packaging is technically non-recyclable and cannot be placed on the market. The bands are a licence, not a scale of virtue — a unit at 71% и единица в 94% sit in the same grade.

Второй, the expiry date on Grade C. There is a gate in front of both. Статья 5 sets PFAS limits for food-contact packaging — 25 ppb for any PFAS, 250 ppb для суммы PFAS, 50 ppm for PFAS including polymeric PFAS — and it is pass or fail, not graded. A grease-resistant coating either clears those limits or it does not, и никакая структурная оптимизация не компенсирует. If your structure includes a coated paperboard or a coated paper for a drip bag, settle the coating question first.

What nobody can give you yet: a grade for a specific bag. The detailed scoring criteria are being written by delegated act, Срок выполнения 1 январь 2028. Any supplier quoting you a grade today is presenting an estimate as a fact — including us. What we can do is tell you exactly what your structure is made of and which parameters in the Regulation it is exposed on, and that is a conversation you can have with your EU buyer now.

Bring the specification you are unhappy with

The most productive conversations on a stand start with something that is not working. A bag that has gone flat by the time it reaches the buyer. A structure that a European customer has started asking questions about. A short run that was quoted at a unit price which made the whole project pointless. A carton that arrives soft. A valve that leaks on one roast profile and not another.

Most of these are cheaper to fix before the next print run than after it, and all of them are easier to fix with the physical sample in hand. Бут 1433, 23–25 October, Panama Convention Center.

Да, and increasingly so. Exporters are being asked by their buyers what the packaging is made of, because the buyer carries the EU obligation. Understanding the structure of the bag you ship in — and what your buyer will need to declare about it — is now part of selling coffee into Europe, not a separate packaging project.

We are a small producer. Are we too small for a factory order?

That is the case digital printing exists for. Short runs are the point of the conversation at this show, not an exception to it. Bring the volume you can actually commit to and we will tell you honestly where it sits — including if the answer is that a stock format would serve you better for now.
